In March 2023, the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery in the Main Building opened A New Kind of House, a year-long exhibition celebrating eight years of Writers Room. The photography and writing of students and neighbors, displayed alongside and in conversation with pieces from The Drexel Collection, created a rich dialogue about the changing face of our university and surrounding neighborhoods.

This exhibition was an extraordinary opportunity to be in expansive conversation with the Atwater Kent Collection’s images of 18th-20th century life in Philadelphia. Through a post-pandemic lens, our diverse, multigenerational community asked: What is a city? Who is it for? Who serves? Who is served? Who decides? Who disrupts?

In summer 2021, members of Paul Robeson High School's graduating class had their portraits projected seven stories high for all the city to see. These young people endured—without being lifted up by moments with friends in the hall or after school, without being able to look toward milestones like prom or senior trip. And yet, after all that was taken from them, they came through the other side triumphant.

In 2018, TRIPOD members celebrated the program’s first year with an exhibition and reading at the Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central. From the beginning, their photographs reflected the myriad points of view of a multigenerational group of individuals who call this city home. Acute observations of their neighborhoods, filled with textures, memories, and stories, evoked a community in constant flux.
